What is Prevent?


Prevent aims to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. It is part of the Government's Counter Terrorism Strategy.

What is Terrorism?


Terrorism is the unlawful use of violence or a threat of violence to support a belief or ideology.

What is extremism?

Extremism is the use of extreme behaviour to support a belief or ideology. Not all extremism is harmful or criminal, but sometimes those who behave in an extreme way can go on to become terrorists.

Prevention is better than the cure


The Hampshire Constabulary Prevent Team, in partnership with local authorities and other partnership agencies, is working to stop people becoming or supporting terrorists. They are doing this by building stronger, safer communities who feel empowered to reject extremism and terrorism in all its forms.

The threat


Although extremely rare in the UK, terrorism is a danger to us all. The communities of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight can be threatened by a minority of people who encourage or glorify violence in the name of a political ideology or a religion. The most severe threat to the UK is currently from people returning from international war zones such as Syria and Iraq. Other threats include people who espouse racist or anti-religious views thereby stirring up hatred which can lead to violence.

Hampshire Constabulary and Toynbee's Aim


Our aim is to help people, to prevent them from being drawn into terrorism or extreme violence. We do this by supporting those people who who are vulnerable to becoming extremists; by working with institutions and sectors and also challenging extremist ideologies especially through our PDL & PSHE programme. Safeguarding options are used to ensure that the individual is protected and that communities remain safe.

The internet is used by some people to promote terrorism and extremism. Hampshire Constabulary is committed to protecting citizens but we rely on people to tell us about it. What has Toynbee done to comply with this initiative?...
 

All staff, including our governors, have completed Level 2 on line training called 'Channel' which is certificated by HM Govt. and updated annually.

  • All staff at Toynbee have been briefed on the 'Prevent' strategy both by email and in our full staff meetings. This information is updated regularly and informed by the latest conferences and external agency advice & guidance.

  • Our policy has been discussed with governors, and then approved and shared with parents and staff. This is regularly reviewed.

  • The Headteacher has had meetings with the local Constabulary to discuss all aspects of 'Prevent' and what Toynbee needs to do to ensure we are prepared.

  • The Pastoral teams at Toynbee have been fully briefed about Prevent; implications for the school and its pastoral programme as well as actions and changes in current practice.

  • ALL pupils have taken part in a role play, discussion and information sharing case study, provided by Hampshire Constabulary and delivered through Drama lessons.

  • Our 'Current Affairs' programme which takes place each week during tutor time has covered aspects of this topic over the course of a number of years and will continue to do so according to what is in the news.
